James Robert 'Jamie' McCrimmon, 'Fury From The Deep' (1968)

The only companion thus far to wear a kilt through time and space, the closest we ever got to finding out if Jamie was a true Scotsman was in 'The Invasion', from memory, when he was climbing a ladder at the IE HQ to escape the Cyber-augmented Tobias Vaughn. There's a lovely story about how he weighted it down to stop it flying about in the wind. Still, given Jamie visited Tibet, the 3000AD Ice Age and the freezing North Sea, you'd hope he had some thermals on under there, or I wouldn't expect the clan McCrimmon to have expanded much when the Time Lords shoved him unceremoniously back in the midst of a Highland battle at the end of the second Doctor's reign.

Jo Grant, 'The Green Death' (1974)

Upon leaving Doctor Who, Katy Manning - Jo Grant who travelled alongside the Third Doctor and gave fans a little bit more than just Nyssa dropping her dress on Terminus...many hoped Kylie Minogue would flash her pasties similarly in 2007, but she kept her waitress dress on.

Romana II, 'Destiny of the Daleks' (1979)

The Fourth Doctor's Time Lady companion Romana, played by the delightful Lalla Ward (now married to Richard Dawkins after a brief marriage with Tom Baker himself), showcased this feminine take on the Doctor's infamous long-scarf-and-coat outfit. And isn't it brilliant, Character Options?

Zoe Heriot, 'The Mind Robber' (1969)

My enduring image of Zoe is the poor wee poppet clinging to the remains of the TARDIS, spinning through a mysterious void between our reality and the Land of Fiction...made all the memorable by a rotating shot that sees our screen filled with her sparkly-catsuited-derriere.

The Ninth Doctor, 'Rose' (2005)

Possibly the most normal of the Doctor's outfits, and perfectly suited to this brooding creature.

Peri, 'The Caves of Androzani' (1984)

JNT was never shy of promoting Nicola Bryant's assets upon joining the TARDIS crew. For the following year, her cleavage threatened all of time and space, until post-hiatus, she adopted for Moffat's ugly-jerseys for a couple of adventures, but was then lobotomized and married off to a Warlord (or whatever the fuck happened in 'Trial of a Time Lord'). Here she is on a Bond-style publicity shoot with Peter Davison (unless there's a sexy lost adventure out there somewhere).

Amy Pond, 'The Eleventh Hour' (2010)

Moffat-era companions have made a habit of showing up in garish jerseys prior to the broadcast of their debut episodes, a trend continued by the latest as-yet-unnamed companion, who seems to make homage to Elisabeth Sladen (see earlier post). Here's Karen Gillan dressed as an anorexic bumblebee on a schools tour of the UK with Matt Smith.

Barbara Wright, 'Marco Polo' (1964)

Unfortunately, 'Marco Polo' is one of those epic stories that no longer survives on celluloid. Which is a shame, as apart from a cracking script, by all accounts, the costumes were fab...as Barbara demonstrates here.

The original series' last companion, Ace (Sophie Aldred) was first written out in the post-TV 'New Adventures' series, returning several novels later, older, wiser and Dalek-battle-weary. Original actress Sophie Aldred posed for a Doctor Who Magazine series of photos dressed as this older, literary version of Ace...
